Packed with helpful and practical “Do’s and Don’ts” suggestions for every church pastor. Pastor Survival is a much-needed, down-to-earth, resource to help pastors refocus on the ultimate purpose of their ministry. This book contains a wealth of pastoral insight gleaned from the battlefield of ministry. It will re-energize you and help you take a fresh new look at your ministry! “Rix Tillman gets it… and now he gives it away by sharing these pastoral principles which he has himself beaten out on the anvil of personal experience through the years of faithfully serving the ministry he has received from the Lord. As I read this valuable volume I only wished I had it in my briefcase as I launched out in ministry myself so many years ago. Read it and reap!” —O.S. Hawkins, D.Min., President, Guidestone Financial Services, former pastor and author of more than 25 books |

| Abstract: | There’s an anonymous saying, “Laugh at yourself and you can survive any circumstance.” “Stumbling Heavenward” has been a life theme of mine in the ministry for the past 30 years. Friends of mine have jokingly said, “Rix will make it to heaven if he doesn’t run by it!” I’ve been amazed that God would use someone like me to be a pastor because I truly am stumbling along every day! I praise God for allowing me to be able to do “everything through Him who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:13). The subtitle of this book, “What They Didn’t Teach You In Seminary, comes from many of my experiences over the past four decades as a new Christian, deacon, Young Life leader, associate pastor in positions of music, youth, singles, evangelism, education, and finally as a senior pastor. I’ve often jokingly said, “I came up from the mail room” because of all the ministry positions I was privileged to have on my way to becoming a senior pastor. Prior to entering the full-time ministry, I was a high school band director and coach, so my diverse background has equipped me for a “ministry of survival”. I am writing, “Pastor Survival” looking back over the last forty years of victories, mistakes, miscues, and successes that I’ve “stumbled” into along the way. For me, Ephesians 6:10-12 sums it up as my life statement: “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. And put them to use so you will be able to stand up to everything the Devil throws your way. This is no afternoon athletic contest that we'll walk away from and forget about in a couple of hours. This is for keeps, a life-or-death fight to the finish against the Devil and all his angels.” May God help you to be a survivor in your pilgrimage for Christ! |
| Reviews: | Lo and behold! Pastor Rix Tillman has blessed the Church with a rare thing: A practical, down-to-earth, and usable guide on how to pastor a church. Written from Tillman’s many years of hands-on experience, in a tone that is neither pedantic nor preachy, Pastor Survival is chock-full of great ideas and guidelines for those pastors who want to avoid the glitz and glitter of self-promotion, and truly further the work of God’s Kingdom.

The Pastor’s Survival is not a collection of warmed over platitudes from yesterday’s textbook for yesterday’s Pastor. It’s not a book to decorate your bookshelf. This is real time help for real life Pastors. It is uncommon sense. Read it. Absorb it. Benefit from the experience of a Pastor who has done it right. Dr. Deron J. | Abstract: | Pillar of Fire chronological Bible devotions was originally conceived as my doctoral dissertation in 1990. The regular Bible is not arranged chronologically, but instead by books such as the Pentateuch, poetry, prophets, psalms, etc. This can be very confusing for the average reader, since many of the books duplicate each other in places and skip back and forth in time sequence. Unfortunately, most people only hear bits and pieces of the Bible, and never really understand how it all goes together. No wonder so many are confused about what the Bible and the Gospel is about and what it all means! They have simply never had the whole story clearly explained from the beginning, in correct order. Since I’ve always been a very practical person, the idea for my doctoral thesis was to show how you can take a normal Bible of any translation and read it through in chronological order in three years with a reading guide and commentary. This idea became my thesis and turned into an almost one thousand page work. After obtaining my Doctor of Ministry degree, I decided in the early 1990’s to rewrite the dissertation into three separate volumes as a daily Bible devotional study, and named these volumes, Daily Light Daily Devotional Guide, Volume I-III. I published a handful of volumes for church members, but got so busy being a senior pastor, I neglected to do any more with the project. Now, after nearly twenty years, and writing the book, Pastor Survival to encourage pastors, I am turning my focus to Christians in general by rewriting and publishing the three year chronological Bible reading adventure and renaming it, “Pillar of Fire”. Exodus 13:21 (NIV) says, “By day the LORD went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night.”(Bold added). The term, “Pillar of Fire” is the same in all translations! If you will come to God with a strong desire to learn His Word, He will be a Pillar of Fire to light your path through life! Psalm 119:105 tells me that God’s Word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” I pray this devotional guide will be God’s Pillar of Fire in your life to jump-start you on the first year of a three year spiritual journey through the Bible. The arrangement of the books of the Bible was established according to the type of literature rather than time sequence. However, Pillar of Fire studies the Scripture as it happened chronologically, with exact and approximate dates given. By following the daily reading guide which is included in each day's devotion, the Bible will be much more readable, thereby greatly increasing your understanding of the Word of God. You can begin this study on any date! |
