| My Website - Reese Leyva My Blogs - Abundance Watch / For the Love of Money My eBook - The Beginner’s Guide to Abundance My Small Biz - SaltyBird Entertainment ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Previously known as Theresa Lee, I now write under the name Reese Leyva. Partially to distinguish myself from my alter ego, the one who owns and operates a Polynesian dance troupe and is known for her hula dancing and fire performing (pretty cool, right?), partially to pay tribute to my new life as a writer, lecturer, performer and all-around-creative-being. Not bad coming from a person with a Bachelor's degree in Finance and over 10 years of professional (and accomplished) finance & accounting experience, eh? Then again, I've been a writer since I was 7. Since I wrote my first poem (that I can remember) I've been madly in love with words. My mom used to say I was such a good kid that when she'd plop me down in a room by myself in my walker right next to a bookshelf, instead of walking I'd just stay right there in the corner - in front of the bookshelf. In retrospect, I think it was a sign. When I was young, I took my love for books a sign that I wanted to be a lawyer. Bad idea. No offense to all the lawyers out there, but when it takes you three tries to complete your Corporate Law class in community college, that's a sign, too. What I was thinking, I'm not so sure. At least I tried. In high school, I was a hell-raiser. My first job was at an auto-shop and I used to drag race illegally on industrial side streets and freeways. I was a little wannabe grease monkey, hanging out with the boys and getting into as many fights as possible just to prove the supremacy of womanhood. I've also been known to engage in other, marginally legal, activities, none of which I will confess to on the World Wide Web. In college, I turned a new leaf and was a bit of an activist, organizing fundraisers for non-profits and lecturing at conferences and seminars about the Pilipino-American experience. At the same time, I was already well on my way to fast-tracking a finance career in Silicon Valley so once I finished college I had several years of (quite accomplished) corporate accounting experience already under my belt. I then moved on from activism to studying subjects like acting, philosophy, breath & movement and holistic health, all on the side, of course, as I was still very dedicated to my finance career. Still, something kept gnawing at me to keep searching ... so I did. I moved to Los Angeles and worked as an accounting and small business consultant to fund my newest slew of projects: I co-wrote and co-produced a short film that never made it out of post. Then I wrote, produced and starred in a full-length play with a cast of 10 (which, sadly, closed in the second week of its run due to lack of funds). THEN I produced (but did not write, nor star in) another, very successful full-length play about the journey of two sperm from ejaculation to conception. FINALLY, fruition! It was a magical experience. It was also a rather funny play, too! And all this time, since I was in high school, I've been a dancer. I enjoy all types of dance but, professionally, I'm a hula dancer. While in L.A. I toured a bit, working about 5 shows a week in the summer, performing from San Diego to Santa Barbara - sometimes in the same weekend. At the end of my L.A. stint, I moved back to the SF Bay Area and started a new, wildly successful, Polynesian entertainment group with my partner and significant other - whose last name happens to be Leyva. Reese, on the other hand, is short for Theresa, a nickname created for me in my producer days; one I'm very proud of and have decided to carry with me. That's the long story of my short name, which brings me to the present. I now reside in a home nestled in the hills of the Bay Area, happily writing and performing at my leisure. I've discovered I've been a writer all along, simply afraid I had nothing to say. All that searching was me discovering what meant enough to me to write about. Well, I've found it. Hence this new site and my new ebook: THE BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO ABUNDANCE Since junior high, all of my English teachers said I should be a writer. My favorite professor in college once told me: You are an unseasonably good writer. You should be a writer. I don't know why you would do anything else. I've finally come to realize - he was right all along. |
