Hey there,

Thank you kindly for visiting my blog and leaving a comment! Not sure if you saw, but I left you a comment on one of your blog articles too.

By the way, I really liked your post The Dying Art of Discipline. It takes great self-confidence and conviction to rant without permission nor apology! I'd have to say that I agree with quite a bit of what you had to say. Thanks for sharing!
Feedback from Jim Bouchard: Thanks for the kind and encouraging words! I look forward to reading more of your articles.

Jim,
I see we have some of the same interests. Having co-authored a book on leadership, and a fan of Fritjof Capra, I would like to hear your thoughts about how power dynamics and ethics are interrelated.

Feedback from Jim Bouchard: Thanks for posting your comments!

I just read "Tao of Physics" this year, and I must say I found it fascinating.

Most of what I share in Dynamic Components is based on my real-life adventures, particularly as a martial artist and instructor. I focus primarily on how to develop and apply power, and how to nourish the sources of human power.

I do address the questions of ethics in my book to a degree. Power is our capacity to do the work neccessary to achieve our objectives. I can apply my power for my good and the good of those around me, or to do harm. I do believe in certain ethical or moral absolutes, but I also recognize that those absolutes are not always evident from a particular individual's perspective, space or time.

Pardon me if I'm blunt; my perspective is that of a fighter more than that of a scholar! If my action or expression of power contributes to the positive development of humanity, I'm probably doing good. If my actions or expression of power are causing harm, than I'm probably doing evil.

Larry Winget has a great take on this issue in his new book, "They Call it Work for a Reason." To paraphrase him, he teaches that if you're doing something you wouldn't want your mother to know about, you're probably doing something wrong! That's simple, but powerfull!

I see a great problem in our culture in that many very good people confuse power with control and dominance. I believe it's our nature to be powerful; too many good people leave a "power vacuum" that can then be exploited by people who use their power to harm others. Weakness is not our natural state; however, we should know when to defer to others and we should always cultivate a sense of compassion along with our personal power.

A very gifted martial arts master I met said, "Martial arts without philosophy is just street fighting." I would apply that same idea to power; without compassion power can simply become domination. With compassion and a well developed set of ethical values, then power becomes an abundant resource for your benefit and the benefit of everyone around you!

Thanks for the very thought provoking comments! Please visit my website at www.JimBouchard.org if you're interested further...there's a complimentary download of the first four chapters of my book. That would clarify some of my positions on ethics.

Jim

About Me

About Me:
I'm a professional speaker and author of "Dynamic Components of Personal Power".

For over 20 years I've been a student and teacher of martial arts. Martial arts is the practice of developing and applying power. Through my practice I found that the same basic components we use to generate and apply power in martial technique can be utilized to create success and happiness in personal and professional life...

...that's why I wrote "Dynamic Components of Personal Power".

I'm very excited to share this philosophy with the public and with the business community. I know that every individual who unlocks personal power and true potential has greater capacity for success and happiness. As more individuals realize true success, then the world enjoys a greater resource: YOU!

"Cultivate the inner self;
Its Power becomes real...
"Cultivate the home;
Its Power becomes abundant.
"Cultivate the community;
Its Power becomes greater.
"Cultivate the organization;
Its Power becomes prolific.
"Cultivate the world;
Its Power becomes universal!"
